Will Metzer has performed music in Over 100 countries worldwide. Since he started playing the piano in Texas USA when his family lived there in 1986, Will picked up his love for music from New Orleans. Will these days works professionally as a: Singer, piano player, producer, Big Band artist, Composer, Write and Educator and Mentor. He has worked in many musical settings as Musical Director for shows and Tribute acts such as: The Andrews sisters and Marilyn Monroe and Buble Tribute shows as well as Burlesque Cabaret Acts. Similarly, he has performed his own Cabaret shows and in Piano Bars on Cruise Ships- PNO, Carnival Cruise liners, Celebrity Equinox, Captain Cook Cruise Ships and now works as an Entertainment consultant to some companies such as: Sea link and Jazz IT UP music.
Aside from his musical prowess, Will is an accomplished Entertainer and engages the crowd to as Billy Joel might suggest in his song- the piano man, ‘Forget about life for a while’. Will’s engaging presence, with a unique ability to be subtly rhetorical in a humorous sense, is surely his main attribute. As one audience member recently noted in his ‘Victor Borge impersonation ‘Will can see a joke from a mile away’!
He holds tertiary qualifications in: Sport and Recreation management, Masters of Education- Primary and Middle, Professional Master Level 3 Tennis Instruction, Diploma of Jazz Music, as well as completing a psychological Science Degree. This interest in furthering himself is evidenced in his fine humour which accompanies his live performances and he has performed with many famous people worldwide. Will himself is a true professional in his own right began performing at the tender age of six years old in The United States. He had piano tuition in his home town of Adelaide from: Dave McEvoy, Kym Perling, Bruce Hancock, Tom Kassai, Joe James and Jason Hammond as well as singing and stage lessons from famous Jazz Singer Mark Murphy (USA) and Greg Hart as well as breathing techniques from Soprano and harpist Emma Horwood. He studied Jazz Piano at the Elder Conservatorium of music in early 2000s and since then has performed extensively around the world playing in such venues and festivals: Raffles (Singapore), Crazy Pianos (Holland), Narita Hotel (Japan), to name a few. He has also performed on Cruse Boats as a Piano bar entertainer. He plays guitar and Piano accordion and has performed accordion since he was 12 years old. His influences on the accordion are: Dutch, French and Italian music. He was taught to play the Piano accordion but his grandmother who kindly gave Will her accordion after completing year 12. Will’s grandmother’s both influenced him and since they have both recently died; Will understands the positive impact in motivating and providing support for a young man following a creative career path. Will has busked around the world on the accordion when he was 18 years old and continues to explore this romantic instrument. He owns 5 accordions and his grandmother own 7 of them.
His influences are diverse however some more prominent than others.
Harry Connick Jnr as well as Michael Buble are the obvious influences whilst Nat King Cole, Tony Bennet and Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra are heard in his tonal texture of sound. Similarly he listened to Vince Jones as well as Tom Jones and John Farnham growing up and these are also present in his delivery and onstage energy. His piano influences are also obvious to the listener. Traces of Oscar Peterson and Monty Alexander as well as the simplicity of Nat King Cole and Thelonias Monk however James Booker, Harry Connick Jnr and Gene Harris would have to be his majour influences. Today Will has perform in excess of 2000 performances in over 50 countries-not bad for a little boy brought up in the bush!
Vocally, Will has sung in Musicals and has had vocal tuition from Choral singing to pop singing. With a raspy seductive resonance to his voice, it is clear to see he is Influenced by Harry Connick Jnr, Frank Sinatra, Louis Prima, Vince Jones, Georgie Fame, Van Morrison, Billy Joel, Peter Allen, Ray Charles and Tom Jones to name a few. He has sung in over 50 countries worldwide in clubs and bars and festivals as well as working as a Singer/Entertainer for Captain Cook Cruises in 2005.
In Adelaide, he sings at weddings and corporate events with his band-Jazz It UP. His band aims at entertaining people by means of performing songs from all genres with a ‘twist’ of Jazz. Will has performed most notably with David Campbell and Beven Addinsall (former young talent time star), Natalie Gauci (former Australian idle winner 2007 and Aleesha Rome). In 2010 he was lucky enough to perform with Simon and Garfunkel’s band in an impromptu concert at the Intercontinental hotel. Most recently (2011)he was performing at one of the most exclusive hotels in the world Raffles and Swiss Hotels in Singapore which has been one of the highlights of his career thus far.
He is in a Rat Pack tribute band ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_AN1z9ZU4c )and also been chosen to sing on a soul karma project http://www.soulkarma.com.au/ showcasing his spiritual vocal qualities. He has also been performing as the pianist/keyboard (music director) for a Burlesque which has just been launched in Adelaide in July (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nykNSks1Opc).
More recently, you can hear him in his band-Jazz It UP at: MT Lofty House, Adelaide Town Hall, Suzie Wong’s, The Old Lion Hotel The Hilton International hotel-Adelaide. He is due to release a Big Band cd in 2013 in which Chong Lim from ‘Dancing with the stars’ will write the arrangements and Angus Burchall (John Farnham and David Campbell’s drummer) featured. He enjoys working with Sarah Lloyde from the 2012 television program ‘The Voice’ who he connects with on a musical level as they both have the appreciation for the old time classic recordings.
In 2015, Will made an original album- Adrenalin Rush comprising of 10 originals recorded and produced by Will himself and Mastered in Adelaide by Disk Edits. He now has 22 albums recorded and plans to release another original album in late 2016. Also in 2015 will released an album with local Hip hop band- The Full Tote Odds ( The chosen few) in which Will was instrumental in the recording at Mix masters Recording studio, Adelaide and arranged the Tunes with Hilltop Hoods trumpet player- Chris Weber.
In early 2015, Will started the ‘Will Metzer Big Band’ which includes percussionist- Ben Todd (Circle Du Soleil) and Adelaide’s top Jazz Musicians. His music arranger- Bob Johnson and Will have been tireless writing Big Band arrangements in Bob’s home in Glenelg including originals and fresh arrangements on well-known standards. Will also utilises the services of Frank Althuisen (Goose and Toto MD) who assists with the big band Management and rehearsal.
He performs regularly with this band around Adelaide including Adelaide Oval and Mt Lofty House on regular occurrences. The opening of this band was at the Arkaba in July 2015 which was a huge success! In August 2016 Will Performed on the Cruise boat- Celebrity Equinox winning the Cruise singing contest and was offered his own Cabaret show which he performed. On the same European trip, Will then performed at Famous London Jazz Club- Ronnie Scott’s and Club 606 which was a tick off his ‘bucket list’. Since then Will performed in Holland, and Croatia as well as being offered a show as resident entertainer on one of the newest and largest Cruise boats- Royal Caribbean Harmony of the seas which he may perform on later in the year.
His Vocal coach these days is Naomi Ayers- Estill method as well as collaborating with friend and Jazz singer- Charmaine Jones to develop his Jazz vocal ideas. He still rehearses the piano 2-3 hours a day since leaving the conservatorium in 2004 and collaborates with the local young musicians who regularly perform with his band Jazz It Up. Will employs around 150 local musicians every year with his business.
At present, Will also collaborates with: Racheal Leachar (The Voice), Sarah Lloyde (The Voice ), Nina V ( my mum Rocks Australian idol winner), The Foenander Brothers ( X factor finalists 2014), the Andrews Sisters Tribute show (Adelaide) and Backstage with D and M in the recent Fringe shows in Adelaide Feb and March 2017.
Will performs many Tribute shows including: Buble, Elvis, Harry Connick Jnr, Ray Charles, Elton John, Billy Joel and Tom Jones and more recently as Victor Borge with aplomb and embraces the role of acting and musical theatre like a duck to water! His adlib work is especially creative and spontaneously humorous.
