Sam Newman

Sam Newman, (John Noel William Newman) is a former AFL Football player turned TV & Radio presenter. He is most known for his 25 years as a panel member on Channel 9’s, ‘The Footy Show’. We have been working with Sam here at Vegas for almost as many years as he has worked for Channel 9! He is said to be one of the most controversial presenters in Australian TV history!

AFL Career

Playing for Geelong Football Club his whole AFL career from 1964 – 1980. He played 300 games and also captained the FC and also won two best and fairest awards (1968 and 1975). During the first semi-final against Collingwood in 1967, Newman suffered a serious injury which forced surgeons to remove part of his kidney. He was also selected as an All-Australian player in 1969. Retiring in 1980, he polled 100 Brownlow Medal votes throughout his career.

Media Career

Moving into 1981, Sam Newman joined radio station 3AW as a football commentator. Continuing with the station through until the end of the 1999 season. He also appeared on ‘World of Sport’ on Channel 7 from 1981-1987 and also for Channel 7, from 93-98 he was a panel member of ‘The Sunday Footy Show.’ But, for the best part of his working career, Sam has worked for Channel 9 on The Footy Show from when the show first started in 1994. He has only recently left the show in 2018 and will this year be back on the panel of ‘The Sunday Footy Show’ on Channel 7.
